The Show Band’s June 17th Concert

The Ontario Chaffey Community Show Band and Holton Family are proud to present“An Evening on Broadway” on Monday, June 17, 2019 in Merton Hill Auditorium, located on the campus of Chaffey High School, on the corner of N. Euclid Ave. and Fifth Street in Ontario.  Early concert goers are invited to come at 7:00 p.m. to hear “The Woodwind Celebration,” an ensemble of musicians from the Show Band.  Complimentary cookies and Starbucks coffee will be served in the lobby.  The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.and is FREE to the public.

The Broadway Theatre has been an enormously popular source of entertainment for several centuries.  Its rich history includes names such as George and Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Weber.  The concert repertoire will include selections form eleven Broadway musicals.

The evening’s special guest artists will be vocalists Sheila Ruff and Brian Detwiler.  Both singers have entertained Show Band audiences on numerous concerts over the past decade.  Sheila will sing two selections from “Funny Girl,” “People” and “I’m the Greatest Star,” also “What I Did for Love” from “Chorus Line” and “Out There On My Own” from “Fame.”  Brian will sing two selections from “West Side Story,” “Maria” and “Tonight” and “What Kind of Fool Am I” from “Stop the World, I Want to Get Off.”  Show Band musician and vocalist Isaac Gonzalez will sing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Starlight Express” and two selections from “Fiddler On the Roof,” “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset.”  Show Band Concertmaster Chris McAleer will sing “On the Street Where You Live” from “My Fair Lady.”  In addition, the concert will feature the outstanding musicians of the Ontario Chaffey Community Show Band in selections from “Oklahoma,” “The Music Man,” and “The Sound of Music.”  The guest conductor is Dr. Jorge Garcia.  The performance will be narrated by Gary and Sue Ovitt.

The Ontario Chaffey Community Show Band was founded in 1985 by R. Jack Mercer and is now under the direction of Dr. Gabe Petrocelli with assistant directors David Schaafsma and Pat Arnold.  Band members represent at least two dozen communities throughout Southern California.  Adult and student musicians are invited to participate.  No auditions!  Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings from 7 to 9:00 p.m. at the Chaffey High School Jack Mercer Band Room.  The band performs monthly concerts in the Merton Hill Auditorium and at other venues throughout the community.  All performances are free to the public.
