Figuring drawing is the backbone of an art education. Working from live models instructs the art student in the principles of light, form, rhythm, composition and anatomy. An awareness of the ideal figure and head must become second nature to the successful artist, who will then be able to render less-ideal shapes.

Paul Speaker is a gifted artist who began his career as a classical cellist. A graduate of renowned Brooks School of Photography in Santa Barbara, Paul now demonstrates his artistic talents with photography.

Told at an early age that in order to fit into the real world, one needs to conform and color "inside the lines", Steven Long used color to express his thoughts and feelings about all sorts of topics in his little world of art. Colorful as well as often humorous, Steven certainly has a different point of view and still refuses to color "inside the lines".

In the late 1950s Los Angeles Times art critic Jules Langsner included Florence Arnold as one of the key Southern California artists contributing to what he called the Hard-Edge School of painters. Other artists in this group included Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson, Frederick Hammersley, Helen Lundeberg and John McLaughlin. Florence Arnold is celebrated with selections from the Museum collection.

In this exhibit we honor our artist members, their ability to Create! beautiful works of art using a multitude of media and sstyles. From the exhibit, the museum will purchase works for the collection.

Affect/Effect displays selected moments that are sometimes subtle, sometimes over, yet often compelling as sketches of the human condition. They are a composite of selected imagery by those who represent the diversit of photo history and create art that affects an understanding of self. Many artists choose not to depict the visual reality of an object but to use their creative energy to communicate to the viewer the emotion, experience or spirituality they feel. Aristotle once said, “The Aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” Artists in this exhibition include Karen Kauffman, Fr. Bill Moore, Lynda Pasztor and Larry White.

Formed by flash floods rushing through cracks in slickrock sandstone, slot canyons can be less than three feet across and over 100 feet deep. Hidden away, they can be dangerous, even deadly. But the walls have interesting textures and swirling shapes resembling abstract art. When the interplay of light and shadow is introduced, the beauty can be both an intimate and awe-inspiring visual experience.

The members of Mid Valley Arts League who have been chosen for the Honor Court are selected in recognition of their status as professional, recognized artists as evidenced by publication of their work, signature membership in other art organizations, service as jurors in art exhibitions and teaching experience. They are exhibiting their recent work which will be juried for awards.

Mid Valley Arts League’s 63rd Members’ Exhibition is a juried exhibition featuring an extraordinary body of work produced by members at all levels. A wide range of subject matter, from representational to non-objective, will stretch your imagination and satisfy your artist’s palette.

Artists express themselves in their own tools or media. Poets and writers use words, plot, metaphors and punctuation. Painters uses colors, composition, texture and value. The paintings in this exhibit touch on a communion of paint and words. The words found in scripture have inspired the art, which I hope will entertain and inspire you.

My goal is to capture moments in time by observing the shapes, shadows and colors in the surrounding environment. These singular moments are then depicted in landscapes and seascapes using pastel and acrylics. Most inspiring are the beautiful and majestic areas of California and New Mexico.

Critical Eye Studio meets weekly in Redlands and has been painting together for several years. Not a painting or work of art is finished or is shown until it has been crituqed by the members. We all know that our work is improved because of suggestions from others. We view critiques as a positive thing, and we welcome this time together. The September artist reception features the work of artist Mark Wood, exhibiting in the Spotlight Gallery. Mark spent his childhood in Napa, then moved to Thousand Oaks as a teenager, and to Pasadena while attending the Art Center College of Design. His subsequent travels throughout the state only deepened his appreciation for California, which he expresses in this exhibition.

Working side-by-side with their students, the art teachers of the Chaffey Joint Union High School District share their knowledge and help students find a visual form of communication. This exhibit highlights the art work of the art teachers.  

We celebrate the talent and artistic exploration of art students in the high schools of the Chaffey Joint Union High School District.    This exhibition is a revival of a previous tradition of exhibiting student art. The young artists in the exhibit were selected by their teachers and have created art in one of four categories: "wet" media, "dry" media, ceramics and digital media. Participating high schools are Alta Loma, Colony, Etiwanda, Montclair, Ontario, and Rancho Cucamonga.

Women have been the driving force throughout human existence for developing the social contract through nurturing, sustenance, understanding and emotional intelligence. Among other things, water is a metaphor for human emotions. Women have refined emotions as a way to bond families, communities and societies. It is important to acknowledge the need for fantasy and escape for women. They give so much to others, they need breaks. My work is a visual exploration of these dynamics.

Milford Zornes and CCMA enjoyed a 75-year relationship that began in 1942 when he first exhibited his artwork at the Second Invitational Purchase Prize Exhibit of Contemporary American Art. The first painting to be hung in the first permanent home of CCMA in 1981 was a watercolor by Milford Zornes. The National Collage Society Postcard Exhibit is a an invitational exhibition comprised of small format 4" x 6" postcard-sized collages. A collage is any artwork created with another layer glued onto the surface.

For the fourth consecutive year, CCMA is pleased to present Framed,Mid Valley Arts League 64th Annual Members Exhibition and Honor Court. This is a juried exhibition featuring an extraordinary body of work by members at all levels. The wide range of subject matter, from representational to non-objective,will stretch your imagination and satisfy your artist's palette.

Is it art or is it craft? That has long been the question. Fiber arts have been the subject of this debate for years, but why? Whether the work is made with needle and thread or with brush and canvas, the same elements and principles of art and design apply, and the same creative feelings and inspirations are put into action. Why debate the subject? Just enjoy the artist's offerings of silk painting, wearable art and silk quilts.

Portrait of our Community highlights the places encompassed by the Chaffey Communities -- the eastern portion of Los Angeles County and the western part of San Bernardino County -- that share a common cultural and historical heritage. Artists in this exhibit include Anders Gustave Aldrin, Bill Anderson, Leonard Albert Davies, Ejnar Hansen,John Martin Hiss, Harold Martin, Tim Solliday, Harriet Glass White, Vera Wise and Milford Zornes.

Collage is nearly a century old and synonymous with innovative subject matter. For collage artists, there is nothing as important as paper. Evem the smallest bits of interesting paper are hoarded to use in their work.

LAX WAX ART is the Southern California Chapter of International Encaustic Aratists (IEA). Their mission is to promote and raise awareness about encaustic fine art throughout Southern California. Their annnual member exhibition highlights their finest work kin this ancient medium.

This exhibit is about the act of living and the flexibility needed to build, grow and overcome challenges. Art making is a process of creating and reacting to the work as if it is in process. In this exhibit, by artists from Women Painters West, the result is the consequence.

Curated by Cindy Rinne Capricious Mischief is a group exhibit of fiber artists who bring the spirit of play. The audience may meet the fox, rabbit, a deer goddess and other characters of folklore. A variety of textile arts include weaving, quilting, embroider and tapestry sculpture, among others.

This body of work represents the people, places and events that have left memorable impressions on my life. The textural, organic qualities make encaustic the perfect medium in which to combine the images and artifacts used to communicate visually this extraordinary journey.

  CCMA's October artist reception honors the members of Women Painters West, fiber artists and curator Cindy Rinne, CCMA artist member Sue Conner, and Young Artist Ailyne Bonilla.   This is the first exhibit at CCMA by Women Painters West, an artist organization that held its first exhibit in 1921. Cindy Rinne returns to the South Gallery with a group of talented fiber artists, while Sue Conner delights with Life Tracks in the Spotlight Gallery.
