Shaping Wood, Shaping Artists: Sam Maloof – Main Gallery

Nationally, Sam Maloof is best known as a furniture designer and master woodworker. But within the Inland Empire artist community, he is fondly and even gratefully remembered as a source of encouragement and mentoring. Larry White and Mike Johnson, both of whom worked for and with Sam for decades, exemplify the results of Sam's mentoring. Larry expanded his creativity to embrace ceramics sculpture, drawing, painting and mixed media, and continues Sam's mentoring of Lauren Verdugo, Larry's apprentice. Mike Johnson builds on the Maloof style of woodworking in his business Sam Maloof Woodworker, Inc. which he operates with his wife Joanne and son Stephen. This exhibit is the companion to the exhibit at the Ontario Museum of History & Art, and is presented in collaboration with the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Crafts.
