Join Dr. Jorge N. Leal, professor, urban and cultural historian for a presentation on how Southern California has been a crucial place for the growth of Latina/o/x music in the United States and the Americas. Dr. Leal will discuss some of the key moments where Latinx music and social history have intersected in Southern California and, most importantly, how music as an expressive culture shaped the belonging of Latinx in the U.S. Dr. Leal is Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in the American Studies and Ethnicity and the History Departments at the University of Southern California. He is the curator of The Rock Archivo LA, an online repository that collects, shares, and examines Latinx youth culture historical ephemera. Light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
